The Real Ronto Wrap Recipe is Out of This World

Earlier this week, Delish released a delightful magazine-style cookbook filled with Disney recipes. Many of these, such as this Ronto Wrap, had never been revealed before. I ordered it immediately, and the first one I tried was this legendary space taco.

To say it was a hit is an understatement.

The exotic Ronto Wrap debuted at both Disneyland and Hollywood Studios with the openings of Galaxy’s Edge way back in the summer of 2019.

Wraps are kind of the in-thing right now. One of my favorite lo-cal foods are the Unwiches at Jimmy John’s. A week of those tasty sandwiches wrapped in lettuce instead of bread can lead to a quick five-pound drop and little suffering.

So in pictures, the Ronto Wrap looks like any other meat-and-veggie filled concoction. But check around on Twitter and see the love-fest. It’s often called the “best quick meal in Hollywood Studios,” and has gained a cult status that compares with that of the famed Grey Stuff.

Of course it wasn’t long until copycat recipes appeared out there in cyberspace. Some attempts were almost worthy of Jedi status. But nobody even came within a light year of figuring out the ingredients – particularly the unique tangy spices in the slaw.

Like most authentic recipes, the outcomes of published Disney recipes can be a little off because of the variance in reducing the ingredients from such a large scale. The Delish Loves Disney (affiliate link) book is also strong on mesmerizing pictures and entertainment, but low on precise instructions. I’ve included my own detailed instructions, which will hopefully save you some time.

Before you get started, here’s a few tips to make this dish a success.

  1. Some of the ingredients will not already be on your pantry shelf. One that you absolutely cannot replace is the Sambal. It’s easy to find in the Asian sections of major groceries. There is no try.

  2. Sumac spice is very difficult to find in any store. Zaatar is a suitable replacement as its main ingredient is sumac.
  3. To get the authentic Disney look, choose smoked sausages that are a little longer than your pitas. These from Heritage Farm worked perfectly for us, even though they are a little fatter than the ones at Hollywood Studios.

  4. If you’re making this camping, consider making the slaw sauce and peppercorn sauce before you leave home. They will keep for a few days refrigerated. The meats and pita are easy to prepare on a camping grill.
  5. The Delish recipe calls for a 2-pound shoulder roast. Most shoulder and butt roasts start around 5 pounds. Consider using a smaller pork tenderloin roast – and it takes far less time to cook. Alternatively, have plans to use the remainder of a larger shoulder roast.

  • 1 tsp freshley ground pepper

Vader Clutch Peppercorn Sauce

  • 1 cup mayonnaise I used Blue Plate
  • 1 tbsp lime juice or more to taste
  • 1 tsp ground sumac can substitute Zaatar
  • 1/4 tsp ground coriander don''t leave this out
  • 1/8 tsp Szechuan peppercorns Tellicherry peppercorns are good replacement. May need up to 1/2 tsp
  • 1/2 tbsp coarse salt

Wraps

  • 1 tbsp canola oil
  • 8 4 oz smoked sausages

Instructions

Prepare Pork

  • Dry uncooked pork, rub oil, and sprinkle with salt and pepper on all sides.

  • Cover with foil and place in pre-heated 350-degree oven for pork tenderloin - or 300 degrees if using pork shoulder. Alterantively, use your favorite crockpot method for cooking the pork.

  • For pork tenderloin, bake about one hour until pork is not longer pink in the middle or registers 160 degrees on a meat thermometer. If using a larger roast (shoulder, rump), cook for 3 hours at 300 degrees.

  • Remove pork from oven and let rest for at least 15 minutes.

  • Cut into thin slices and set aside.

Spicy Ronto Slaw

  • Make the sauce in a small bowl. Add sugar to mayonnaise, and then stir in remaining ingredients except for cabbage and carrots.

  • Place cabbage and carrots in a medium bowl, and pour dressing over. Stir well with wooden spoon. Refrigerate until ready to use.

Vader Clutch Peppercorn Sauce

  • Combine mayo, sumac, lime juice, and coriander in small bowl. Add a little more lime juice to taste.

  • Using the back of a spoon, lightly break up the peppercorns. Stir peppercorn pieces and salt into mayo mixture.

  • Adjust salt and pepper to taste.

Pitas and Sausages

  • Grill or pan fry the sausages for 5-7 minutes over medium high heat. Set aside, keeping warm.

  • Warm up the pork in the pan or on grill for a couple of minutes, being careful not to overcook. I added a little lemon pepper to them at this point.

  • Warm up pitas on skillet or grill, flipping after 30-60 seconds.

Putting It Together!

  • Spread a thin layer of the Vader Clutch Sauce on each pita.

  • Top with a few slices of pork and then a sausage.

  • Top with a generous portion of slaw. Drizzle a little more Vader Clutch Sauce on top. I use a lot of Clutch sauce, but I'm a saucy kind of gal.

  • Serve in a paper wrap or wax paper. If serving on plate, you may want to use a bamboo toothpick to hold together. Prepare for your taste buds to smile.

I’m trying a few more Delish Loves Disney recipes this week, and will share a favorite that meets expectations. Overall, it’s a wonderful book. I do wish there was something from Fort Wilderness and more from Epcot’s Food and Wine Festival. I ordered last Monday, and it was on my doorstep by Wednesday.
