EVENTS AND OPINIONThe UK Hi-Fi Show LiveAfter a three-year hiatus, the UK Hi-Fi Show Live returned to Ascot’s iconic Grandstand [left]. Once inside the huge venue – the 2nd floor alone spans one-third of a kilometre – visitors were greeted with an illuminated display highlighting just a few of the many stunning and technically innovative products on demonstration. The event boasted over 200 featured brands while the series of specialist Workshops proved to be as popular as ever. This Signature set-up married Canor hardware with Canton loudspeakers. The new Reference line from Canton is more overtly ‘stylish’ than the previous Reference K [HFN May & Aug ’22], and led by the three-way Reference 7 tower, fed here by separates including Canor’s CD1.10 player/DAC and the ‘pure Class A’ Virtus I2 integrated [see p75]. www.canton.de; www.canor-audio.com Magico’s…1 min
EVENTS AND OPINIONWarsaw AV Show 2023Organised by Adam Mokrzycki and aided by Poland’s Audio Magazine, the Warsaw AV Show has grown to become the largest hi-fi event in Europe. That was certainly the case in 2023, with an estimated 15,000 visitors enjoying access to no fewer than 150 rooms. The large numbers are partly explained by the broad scope of the show itself as well as the vibrant audio market in Poland. The show is spread over three venues in the Polish capital, one of which is the gigantic PGE Narodowy National Football Stadium. It’s at this location in particular that you’ll notice a very diverse crowd, which includes many teenagers and families with children. The two other locations, at the Sobieski Hotel and Golden Tulip Hotel, offered more rarified hi-fi gear… Moon by Simaudio’s…2 min
EVENTS AND OPINIONAxpona 2024Opening its doors on April the 12th 2024 at The Renaissance Schaumburg Convention Centre on the outskirts of Chicago, the Audio Expo of North America (Axpona) is the largest event of its kind in the US. With over 200 listening rooms, some 9000 visitors and north of 600 audio brands in attendance, the event vies with Munich and Warsaw as the show to premier products. Headphone aficionados could enjoy the Ear Gear Experience in the Expo Hall, which also housed the Record Fair where new and vintage vinyl was for sale. And there were some notable trends. Subwoofers were sneaking into the mix, with numerous 2.2 systems on display, while thanks to lossless streaming it was easy to ask exhibitors to play pretty much any track. Renowned for his visually…1 min
EVENTS AND OPINIONHigh End, Munich 2024Attracting close to 22,000 visitors over the weekend of the 11th and 12th of May, this year’s High End Munich again confirmed its status as the most significant hi-fi show in the world. Stands were manned by 513 exhibitors from 41 countries, with nearly 1000 brands on display. This year was bolstered by a new side event called International Parts+Supply, with component and OEM manufacturers housed in a separate area. This freed up space in the regular halls for actual hi-fi brands and so made the show more relevant for consumers. As in previous years, some companies preferred to present their products in venues away from the main centre. Hence we saw a number of brands cross the street to strut their stuff at the nearby Motorworld. Musical Fidelity launched…2 min
EVENTS AND OPINIONAudiojumble 2024Now scheduled for just one event per year instead of two, the result was a busier Audiojumble at the Angel Centre in Tonbridge. Indeed, it was reminiscent of the first fair to follow the Covid lockdown in 2022, all that pent-up hunger for vintage gear and bargains ensuring good crowds for the vendors, who had been stocking up on turntables and assorted electronics. If there’s been a trend, it’s the increasing rarity of what were the most coveted vintage items. Radford amplifiers were notably absent and there were fewer LS3/5A loudspeakers for sale. But on the other hand, the number of open-reel decks on offer had risen – a direct response to the cult revival of reel-to-reel. There was also an increase in used vinyl on display. This clean pair…2 min
